Sure, "Never Enough" is a controversial title, but even before I purchased this book, I suspected that a former SEAL commander is not going to write a book about never being satisfied with what you have or what you have achieved. That’d just make you miserable!Clearly, "Never Enough" contains phenomenal self-help advice and inspirational insight to aspiring leaders in the military, public and private sectors. Yes, of course, there is a lot here to model and to adopt for anyone who aspires to lead people in the future or who is already in a position of leadership and who wants to become a more effective leader. There are great advice and inspirational wisdom in every chapter that will help you to build and lead effective teams of over-achievers. You have to read it, as a matter of practicality. However, "Never Enough" touched me a bit deeper than a typical self-improvement book. On its face, it is a series of personal stories of ordinary people who pushed themselves to become extraordinary. It is also about difficult decisions and choices Mike had to take daily, but even more so, it is about the guiding principles one must adopt to become an effective leader. But, there was something much deeper that resonated with me. When I finished reading it, I took a long stroll, thinking about the ideas and experiences described by Mike, pushing a bit harder through my exercise routine (another benefit of this book!), thinking about people described and the decisions Mike took. I felt a bit sad but uplifted at the same time. Would I react the same? Did I agree with every decision he took? What was this book about? Then the answer crystallized for me. This book is about being GENUINE in everything we do, in every pursuit we make. It is about having a genuine RESPECT for the mission and the team, having a GENUINE belief in the core principles that drive us, and LOVE for the family and the people we lead, and about taking ourselves a little bit less seriously. There is of course much more in the book, but this what stood out for me.Of course, the author is a modern-day renaissance man and few can achieve his levels of excellence - an elite warrior, effective leader, business executive, philosopher, caring father and husband, a humble man with a strong set of personal beliefs he presents an unbelievable model to copy. But copy him we must not. Use this book to be inspired to find your dimensions of excellence, adopt what I think are the most important aspects of SEAL commander leadership style – assertiveness, humility, integrity, and, above all, genuine care and respect for the people around us.On the things to improve, I wish this book ( I have a Kindle edition) have had photos and last names of some of the heroes we encounter on its pages. I wish I could see the photos of Anthony, Jackson, and other heroes. I wish I could look at their smiling faces and could simply thank them for taking care of us, for the sacrifices they’ve made. One last takeaway from the book is Mike’s personal story. I long believed that the specialization is for insects, not for humans. We adapt, expand, overcome, and solve problems as long as we have the right drive, moral stamina, and a set of guiding principles. The domain is not important – the ability for rational thinking, motivation, assertiveness, and leadership skills are of paramount importance. And that is what Mike has reconfirmed for me in this book, once again. The spirit of leadership jumps off of every single page. You want this book on your shelf, and in view, for when you need inspiration or to be reminded of your own inner power to make a difference. This is a story of leadership, whoever you are, or wherever you are in life (career or struggle).
